Chicago Fire Extends Unbeaten Streak with Wild 4-4 Draw at Toronto
Eight goals, three different leads and a hat trick weren’t enough to separate Chicago Fire FC and Toronto FC on Saturday night.
Chicago saw a late advantage disappear in stoppage time but still extended its Major League Soccer unbeaten streak to six matches with a wild 4-4 draw against Toronto FC at BMO Field.
Maren Haile-Selassie led the Fire attack with two goals, while Robert Lewandowski added his fifth MLS goal of the season. Chicago moved to 11-6-5 with 38 points with the result.
The Fire opened the scoring in the 13th minute. After Toronto cleared a corner kick, Haile-Selassie controlled the loose ball and fired a shot that took a deflection before finding the net, giving Chicago an early 1-0 advantage.
Toronto’s Josh Sargent quickly turned the match around.
Sargent got behind the Chicago defense and scored in the 27th minute to tie the match. He struck again in the 38th, collecting a loose ball inside the penalty area and finishing to give Toronto a 2-1 halftime lead.
Chicago responded immediately after halftime.
Philip Zinckernagel delivered a cross toward Lewandowski in the 49th minute, but Toronto defender Walker Zimmerman redirected the ball into his own net to bring the Fire level at 2-2.
Five minutes later, Sargent completed his hat trick. Djordje Mihailovic provided the pass before Sargent scored his third of the night in the 54th minute, putting Toronto back in front, 3-2.
The lead lasted only four minutes.
Jonathan Dean sent a ball toward Lewandowski that Toronto goalkeeper Luka Gavran punched away. The clearance fell to Haile-Selassie near the top of the box, and the Chicago winger buried the opportunity in the 58th minute for his second goal of the night.
Haile-Selassie’s brace gave him seven goals this season, establishing a new single-season career high. He also moved to 15 goal contributions in 2026 with seven goals and eight assists.
Then came Lewandowski.
In the 63rd minute, Zinckernagel worked his way through pressure and played the ball into the penalty area. Haile-Selassie cleverly allowed the pass to run through to Lewandowski, who finished the chance to give Chicago a 4-3 lead.
It was Lewandowski’s fifth MLS goal since joining the Fire.
Chicago appeared headed for all three points before Toronto produced one final response.
Substitute Derrick Etienne Jr. arrived in the penalty area during stoppage time and curled a shot into the opposite corner, tying the match at four and denying Chicago the road victory.
Despite surrendering the late equalizer, the Fire extended their MLS unbeaten streak to six consecutive matches, the club’s longest league unbeaten run since 2017.
Chicago finished with 16 shots and five shots on goal while holding 55.1 percent of the possession. Toronto recorded 18 shots with eight on target. Fire goalkeeper Chris Brady finished with four saves.
Newly acquired defender Noah Allen also made his Chicago debut after entering at halftime, while Johan Gómez came on late for his Fire and MLS debut.
Chicago now returns home for a major Eastern Conference matchup against Inter Miami CF on Wednesday, September 9. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Eastern at Soldier Field.
