Wabash Hands Rose-Hulman First Loss in 4-1 Victory

Wabash College remained perfect on the young season Wednesday evening, using a pair of goals from Alfredo Campos to knock off Rose-Hulman 4-1 at Fischer Field in Crawfordsville.

The Little Giants wasted little time taking control.

Campos opened the scoring just 2:14 into the match, finishing a buildup involving JD Branigan and Bryce Kinnaman to put Wabash ahead 1-0.

Rose-Hulman had opportunities to answer. Ryan Shapiro put an attempt on goal in the 13th minute, while the Fightin’ Engineers also hit the woodwork during the opening half. But Wabash goalkeeper Rafael Cordova kept Rose-Hulman off the scoreboard.

Wabash doubled its advantage late in the first half.

After Rose-Hulman goalkeeper Justin Burns and the Engineers’ defense initially turned away Wabash opportunities, Blake Horn found the back of the net at the 39:25 mark to give the Little Giants a 2-0 halftime lead.

Campos struck again early in the second half. His second goal of the match came in the 58th minute and extended the Wabash advantage to 3-0. Campos now has five goals through the Little Giants’ first five matches.

Rose-Hulman refused to go quietly.

Shapiro pulled the Engineers back within two in the 64th minute, beating Cordova for his fourth goal of the season. Shapiro continues to lead the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in goals.

The Engineers generated additional pressure following the goal, but Wabash prevented the comeback from gaining any more momentum.

Colton Hughes-Suiters put the match away in the 82nd minute, scoring off an assist from Danny Tkachuk to produce the final 4-1 margin.

Wabash finished with a 19-12 advantage in shots and put seven attempts on goal compared with five for Rose-Hulman. The Little Giants also held a narrow 8-7 edge in corner kicks.

Cordova made three saves in the Wabash goal. Rose-Hulman’s Burns recorded two saves.

The victory keeps Wabash unbeaten at 5-0, matching the Little Giants’ 5-0 start from the 2024 season. Rose-Hulman suffers its first defeat and drops to 2-1-1.

Both teams return to action Saturday. Rose-Hulman travels to Decatur, Illinois, to face Millikin at 7 p.m. Eastern, while Wabash stays home to face Alma College at 1 p.m. as part of the Robbie Dreher Classic.
