IU Indy Falls 2-0 at Northern Illinois in Horizon League Opener

IU Indianapolis saw its three-match winning streak come to an end Wednesday as the Jaguars dropped a 2-0 decision at Northern Illinois in their Horizon League opener in DeKalb.

The Jaguars entered the match riding three consecutive 1-0 victories and had not allowed a goal since their season opener at Louisville. Northern Illinois, however, was able to break through twice and hand IU Indy its first loss since August 20.

Luka Vasic opened the scoring for the Huskies, scoring his third goal of the season off an assist from Roman Khela.

Northern Illinois later doubled the advantage when Tomasz Slawek found the back of the net for his first goal of the campaign. Khela collected his second assist of the match.

IU Indy was unable to solve NIU goalkeeper Cayden Crawford, who made three saves to record the clean sheet.

Northern Illinois controlled the shot totals, finishing with a 17-7 advantage overall and putting eight attempts on goal compared with three for the Jaguars. Both teams generated plenty of opportunities from set pieces, finishing with 11 corner kicks apiece.

IU Indy goalkeeper Peter Field made six saves in the loss. The two goals ended a run of three consecutive shutouts for the freshman and the Jaguars’ defense.

The loss drops IU Indy to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in Horizon League play. Northern Illinois improves to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

The Jaguars now return to Indianapolis for the start of a three-match homestand. IU Indy hosts Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday, September 12, at 5 p.m. at Michael A. Carroll Stadium.
