Bethel Falls to Northwestern Ohio, 3-1

Bethel University struck first Saturday afternoon, but the Pilots couldn’t make the early advantage stand as the University of Northwestern Ohio rallied for a 3-1 victory.

Bethel opened the scoring just over six minutes into the match. Diego Cadabon scored his first goal of the season at the 6:22 mark, with Noe Ferreira and Luca Canto combining on the assists to give the Pilots a 1-0 lead.

The advantage lasted for most of the opening half before Northwestern Ohio pulled even. Ryan Yates scored in the 40th minute off an assist from Micah Williams, sending the teams into halftime tied at one.

Northwestern Ohio took control after the break. Williams went from provider to scorer in the 68th minute, finding the back of the net for his first goal of the season and putting the Racers ahead, 2-1.

The match became increasingly physical down the stretch. Northwestern Ohio’s Ognjen Stanic was shown a red card in the 80th minute, but the Racers still managed to add an insurance goal. Jack Kunossn scored in the 82nd minute off an assist from Raul Oliu, extending the lead to 3-1.

Bethel was also reduced to 10 men shortly afterward when Esteban Mancilla received a red card in the 83rd minute.

The Pilots actually generated more opportunities despite the loss, finishing with a 15-9 advantage in shots, a 6-5 edge in shots on goal and a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Northwestern Ohio’s goalkeeper made five saves to keep Bethel from adding to its early goal.

The defeat snaps Bethel’s three-match winning streak after victories over Cumberlands, Cornerstone and Carroll. The Pilots are scheduled to return to action Tuesday night on the road against Olivet Nazarene.
