Week 4 Boys HS Soccer Rankings Released

The latest Indiana Soccer Coaches Association boys soccer rankings feature a major shakeup at the top of Class 3A, while the leaders in Classes 2A and 1A remain unchanged entering another important week of the regular season.

Bloomington South is the new No. 1 team in Class 3A, moving up two positions from last week. Castle also climbs two spots to No. 2, while last week’s top-ranked team, Goshen, falls to No. 3.

Guerin Catholic continues to lead Class 2A, while Blackhawk Christian remains the team to beat in Class 1A.

CLASS 3A: Bloomington South Takes the Top Spot

Bloomington South’s rise to No. 1 comes after another strong week for the Panthers. Bloomington South improved to 7-0-2 after a 3-1 victory over Floyd Central on Saturday. The Panthers have now won seven consecutive matches after opening the season with draws against Center Grove and Evansville North.

Bloomington South’s résumé also includes a 1-0 victory over Castle earlier this season — particularly significant now that Castle has climbed to No. 2 in the new rankings.

Castle jumps from No. 4 to No. 2. The Knights entered the weekend 8-1-1 and continued to showcase one of the state’s most productive attacks. Castle crushed Evansville Bosse 10-0 during the week, with Lucas Jurado continuing to spearhead an offense that had scored 46 goals through its first ten matches.

Goshen’s first loss of the year proved costly in the poll.

The RedHawks entered last week ranked No. 1 but were upset 1-0 by Concord on September 8. Goshen responded by defeating Penn 2-0 and then knocked off Chesterton 2-1 on Saturday. Despite the quick recovery, the Concord defeat was enough to send Goshen down two positions to No. 3.

Zionsville moves from No. 5 to No. 4 after extending its winning streak. The Eagles blanked Franklin Central 2-0 during the week and have developed into one of the state’s strongest defensive teams.

Hamilton Southeastern falls three positions from No. 2 to No. 5. The Royals’ biggest setback came in a 1-0 loss to rival Fishers on September 8. HSE recovered with a 3-1 victory over Brebeuf Jesuit and a 1-0 win over Oak Hill.

That victory over HSE helped Fishers rise from No. 8 to No. 6.

The Tigers had arguably one of the best weeks of any 3A program, beating Hamilton Southeastern 1-0, Pendleton Heights 4-0 and Anderson 4-0. Fishers finished the stretch with four consecutive shutouts and enters the new week as one of the hottest teams in the state.

Chesterton also makes a significant jump, moving from No. 12 to No. 9. The Trojans defeated Valparaiso and Merrillville before beating Penn 1-0 on Saturday. Their lone setback came later that day against Goshen, 2-1.

Concord moves from No. 13 to No. 10 following arguably the most impressive two-game stretch of the week. The Minutemen knocked off then-No. 1 Goshen 1-0 and followed it with a 2-0 victory over highly ranked Mishawaka Marian.

Perhaps the biggest mover in the entire poll is Columbus North.

The Bull Dogs jump seven positions, from No. 20 to No. 13. Columbus North defeated Bloomington North 6-1 during the week after entering the stretch with a résumé that also included a shutout of Cathedral and a draw against North Central.

Jasper and Elkhart enter the Class 3A Top 20 this week, while Lawrence Central and Harrison fall out.

CLASS 2A: Guerin Catholic Remains No. 1

There is no change at the top of Class 2A.

Guerin Catholic remains No. 1 after another strong week that included a 5-1 victory over Harrison. The Golden Eagles have held the top spot throughout the regular-season rankings.

Mishawaka Marian stays at No. 2 despite suffering its first loss of the season. Marian defeated South Bend Saint Joseph 1-0 before falling 2-0 to Concord. The Knights were 7-1 entering the new week and remain firmly positioned as one of the state’s premier teams.

Bishop Noll climbs one position to No. 3, pushing Park Tudor down to No. 4.

Park Tudor had an interesting week. The Panthers defeated Bishop Chatard 3-2 and Bethesda Christian 4-1 but then suffered their first loss, falling 2-0 to Mt. Vernon on Saturday.

Leo climbs from No. 6 to No. 5 after producing one of the most notable victories of the week, a 3-0 win over Fort Wayne Carroll. That result also contributed to Carroll sliding two positions in the Class 3A poll.

Hanover Central makes the largest jump inside the 2A rankings, moving from No. 15 to No. 12.

Bremen, Andrean and Greencastle move into the poll at Nos. 17, 18 and 19 respectively.

CLASS 1A: Blackhawk Christian Remains Firmly on Top

There is much less movement at the top of Class 1A.

Blackhawk Christian remains No. 1, followed by Faith Christian, Shawe Memorial, Greenwood Christian and Westview. The entire top seven remains unchanged from last week’s rankings.

Blackhawk Christian entered the weekend unbeaten at 6-0-1 and had outscored opponents 37-3. The Braves rolled past Fort Wayne Canterbury 9-0 during the week after previously posting shutouts over Norwell, Fort Wayne Concordia, Heritage and Fort Wayne Snider.

Shawe Memorial stays at No. 3 despite suffering its first loss of the season. The Hilltoppers fell 3-0 to Greensburg after opening the year undefeated.

Argos makes the biggest move near the top, jumping from No. 10 to No. 8.

Bethesda Christian climbs one spot to No. 11 despite its 4-1 loss to Class 2A No. 4 Park Tudor.

South Knox also continues moving upward, climbing from No. 16 to No. 14.

Barr-Reeve enters the rankings at No. 20.

THIS WEEK’S MATCHUPS TO WATCH

The September 14-19 schedule could create just as much movement when next week’s rankings are released.

No. 1 Bloomington South vs. Cathedral — Sept. 15

Bloomington South gets its first match as the state’s new No. 1 when the Panthers host Cathedral Tuesday. With Bloomington South undefeated and riding a seven-match winning streak, it will be an immediate test of whether the Panthers can hold the top position.

No. 2 Castle at No. 8 Evansville Memorial — Sept. 16

One of the biggest ranked matchups in southern Indiana comes Wednesday when Castle travels to Evansville Memorial.

Castle’s high-powered attack will face a Memorial side coming off a 2-1 victory over Evansville North. The Tigers were 5-2-1 following that result.

No. 5 Hamilton Southeastern vs. Westfield — Sept. 15

No. 5 Hamilton Southeastern vs. No. 11 Noblesville — Sept. 17

Hamilton Southeastern faces a potentially season-defining week.

After dropping three positions in the rankings, the Royals host Westfield Tuesday and Noblesville Thursday. A sweep would give HSE an immediate opportunity to climb back toward the top three.

No. 6 Fishers at No. 14 Brownsburg — Sept. 15

No. 6 Fishers vs. No. 7 Valparaiso — Sept. 19

Few ranked teams have a tougher week than Fishers.

The Tigers travel to Brownsburg Tuesday before hosting Valparaiso Saturday. Fishers enters the week riding four consecutive shutouts, making the Saturday matchup with Valparaiso one of the best 3A games on the statewide schedule.

No. 4 Zionsville at No. 11 Noblesville — Sept. 15

No. 4 Zionsville at 1A No. 2 Faith Christian — Sept. 19

Zionsville has two fascinating tests.

The Eagles travel to HCC rival Noblesville Tuesday, then head to Lafayette Saturday night to face Faith Christian in a rare matchup between one of Class 3A’s best and one of Class 1A’s championship contenders. MaxPreps lists Faith Christian at 8-1 entering the matchup.

No. 3 Goshen vs. Bethany Christian — Sept. 15

No. 3 Goshen vs. NorthWood — Sept. 17

After falling from No. 1, Goshen has a chance to begin its climb back. The RedHawks host Bethany Christian Tuesday before returning to Northern Lakes Conference play against NorthWood Thursday.

2A Games to Watch

Mishawaka Marian begins its week Monday at Elkhart Christian before hosting Penn Wednesday. How the Knights respond to their first loss against Concord could determine whether they remain No. 2 next week.

Park Tudor also has little time to dwell on its first defeat. The Panthers visit Herron Monday and host Greenfield-Central Tuesday.

Leo travels to DeKalb Wednesday after its impressive 3-0 win over Fort Wayne Carroll.

1A Games to Watch

Top-ranked Blackhawk Christian faces Bishop Dwenger Monday, East Noble Thursday and Fort Wayne South Side Saturday. The Saturday matchup could provide Blackhawk with one of its strongest tests of the season.

No. 2 Faith Christian has an especially intriguing Saturday matchup when it hosts 3A No. 4 Zionsville. That match could serve as one of the best measuring sticks of the season for the Eagles.

No. 3 Shawe Memorial hosts No. 17 Rising Sun Wednesday. Shawe will be trying to rebound from its first loss, while Rising Sun has climbed two positions in this week’s rankings.

THE BIG PICTURE

Class 3A suddenly looks wide open.

Bloomington South has earned the top spot with an undefeated start, but Castle, Goshen, Zionsville, Hamilton Southeastern and surging Fishers are all close enough that another week of head-to-head results could completely reshuffle the top six.

Concord may be the most dangerous team outside that group after defeating No. 1 Goshen and 2A No. 2 Mishawaka Marian in consecutive matches.

Meanwhile, Guerin Catholic continues to set the pace in 2A, and Blackhawk Christian remains the standard in 1A.

With ranked-vs.-ranked games scattered throughout the September 14-19 schedule, next week’s ISCA poll could be every bit as eventful as this one.
