Slavens, Asbury Selected for Indiana Soccer Coaches Association Hall of Fame

Two longtime Indiana high school soccer coaches are set to receive one of the state’s highest coaching honors, as Phil Slavens and Joe Asbury have been selected for induction into the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
The ISCA Hall of Fame was established to recognize coaches who have made significant contributions to high school soccer in Indiana. According to the association, Hall of Fame members are honored not only for their accomplishments on the field, but also for their role in growing the sport and serving as examples for future generations.
Phil Slavens
Slavens has been a longtime figure in the Brownsburg soccer community, with his impact extending well beyond the high school field.
He served as a varsity coach at Brownsburg High School and was also president of the Brownsburg Junior Soccer League. His involvement in youth sports also included serving as president of Brownsburg Little League Baseball and chair of the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports.
Slavens’ contributions to his community have previously earned recognition outside athletics. In 2013, he received the Sagamore of the Wabash, one of Indiana’s most prestigious honors, following a 44-year career with the Indiana Department of Correction and decades of community service.
His selection for the ISCA Hall of Fame adds another honor to a career marked by service to student-athletes and the Brownsburg community.
Joe Asbury
For soccer fans in southwestern Indiana, Asbury’s name has become synonymous with Heritage Hills boys soccer.
Asbury has built the Patriots into a consistently successful program and is listed by the ISCA among the select group of Indiana high school soccer coaches with more than 300 career victories.
His tenure has included numerous successful seasons at Heritage Hills. One of the program’s landmark moments came in 2021, when the Patriots defeated Gibson Southern 2-0 to capture the first regional championship in program history and advance to the semistate.
Heritage Hills has continued to produce winning seasons under Asbury. The Patriots went 19-2 in 2021, 14-3-1 in 2022, 12-5-2 in 2023, 16-2 in 2024 and 15-4-2 in 2025, according to historical records compiled by MaxPreps.
Asbury remains involved with the Heritage Hills program, where the school’s athletic department currently lists him as a boys soccer assistant coach.
A Lasting Impact on Indiana Soccer
The selection of Slavens and Asbury recognizes two coaches whose influence reaches far beyond wins and losses.
Slavens helped develop soccer and youth athletics in the Brownsburg community, while Asbury has spent decades building Heritage Hills into one of southern Indiana’s most respected boys soccer programs.
Their induction will place them alongside some of the biggest names in Indiana high school soccer history. The ISCA Hall of Fame includes coaches such as Frank Dixon, Jerry Little, Greg Mauch, Dan Kapsalis, Kevin Myers, Angie Lensing and Ben Householter.
For Phil Slavens and Joe Asbury, Hall of Fame recognition serves as a fitting tribute to careers spent teaching the game, developing student-athletes and helping high school soccer grow throughout Indiana.
