Late Penalty Lifts DePauw Past Rose-Hulman, 2-1

Braden Murphey converted a penalty kick in the closing minutes Wednesday night to lift DePauw to a 2-1 victory over Rose-Hulman in an in-state men’s soccer matchup at Reavis Stadium.
The victory moved DePauw to 4-1-0, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 2-2-2. The Tigers bounced back from their first loss of the season, a 4-1 setback against Calvin, while Rose-Hulman entered Wednesday coming off a 3-3 draw at Millikin.
Rose-Hulman struck first behind Ryan Shapiro, who continued his outstanding start to the season. Shapiro found the net at 12:11, giving the Fightin’ Engineers an early 1-0 advantage. It was his sixth goal of the season after he entered the match leading the HCAC with five.
DePauw needed less than eight minutes to answer. Julian Bell scored at 19:50, with Harrison Engel providing the assist, tying the match at 1-1.
The score remained deadlocked through halftime and deep into the second half. DePauw increasingly controlled the attack after the break, holding Rose-Hulman without a second-half shot while generating eight of its own.
The breakthrough finally arrived at 86:53 when DePauw was awarded a penalty kick. Braden Murphey stepped to the spot and converted for his first goal of the season, putting the Tigers ahead 2-1 with just over three minutes remaining.
Rose-Hulman couldn’t find an equalizer.
DePauw finished with a commanding 13-3 advantage in shots, including a 6-1 edge in shots on goal. The Tigers also generated nine corner kicks compared with just one for Rose-Hulman.
The victory gives DePauw its fourth win in five matches and its second consecutive victory over Rose-Hulman after the Tigers won last year’s meeting 2-0. The programs were meeting for the 47th time.
