Bethel Battles Rio Grande to 1-1 Draw in Mens Soccer

RIO GRANDE, Ohio — Bethel University turned in a strong offensive performance Thursday night but had to settle for a 1-1 draw against the University of Rio Grande in men’s soccer action.

The Pilots controlled much of the attacking play, finishing with a commanding 17-5 advantage in shots. Bethel put four attempts on goal compared to three for Rio Grande.

Jorge Rodriguez provided the scoring for the Pilots, finding the back of the net for his first goal of the match. Rio Grande answered with a goal from Nahuel Coppiz as the teams ultimately finished level.

Bethel also generated more opportunities from set pieces, holding a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Defensively, the Pilots limited Rio Grande to only five total shots. Bethel’s goalkeeper recorded two saves, while Rio Grande made three saves against the Pilots’ four shots on target.

The match featured six yellow cards, with Bethel receiving two and Rio Grande four. The Pilots were whistled for 13 fouls compared to 12 for the RedStorm.

Bethel was also caught offside seven times, compared to twice for Rio Grande.

The draw moves the Pilots to 0-1-2 on the young season.
