IU Indy Blanks Bowling Green, 1-0, Behind Late Weinrich Goal

INDIANAPOLIS — IU Indianapolis picked up its second consecutive victory Friday night, defeating Bowling Green 1-0 at Michael A. Carroll Stadium.

The victory improved the Jaguars to 2-1-0 on the season and marked IU Indy’s first win over Bowling Green since 2004.

After the two teams played a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the Jaguars finally broke through late in the second half.

Making his collegiate debut, Thomas Weinrich delivered the game-winner in the 80th minute. Santiago Sanchez played Weinrich into space on the left side, and Weinrich worked his way to the right before curling a low shot inside the far post to give IU Indy the 1-0 advantage. Weinrich had joined the Jaguars earlier in the week after signing from LouCity FC.

From there, the IU Indy defense made the one-goal advantage stand.

Freshman goalkeeper Peter Field recorded four saves to earn his second consecutive shutout. Field came up with an important stop on Bowling Green’s Lucas Brinkman in the 21st minute and added two more key saves during the second half.

Bowling Green held an 8-6 advantage in shots during the opening half, but IU Indy responded after halftime. By the final whistle, the teams were even with 13 shots apiece, while both sides also finished with eight corner kicks.

The victory gives IU Indy back-to-back 1-0 shutouts after the Jaguars also blanked Lindenwood on Monday.

IU Indy will now hit the road, traveling to Evansville to face Southern Indiana on Wednesday, September 2 at 5 p.m.
