Saint Francis Falls at Cornerstone, 3-1 in Women’s Soccer

The University of Saint Francis women’s soccer team suffered its second loss of the season Saturday evening, falling 3-1 on the road at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Cornerstone opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Mady Teffner scored her fourth goal of the season to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 advantage.

Saint Francis answered in the 32nd minute. Taylor Keenan scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Paige McCarley, pulling the Cougars even at 1-1.

The tie lasted only 22 seconds.

Cornerstone’s Gracie Gortmaker found the back of the net at the 31:44 mark, putting the Golden Eagles back in front, 2-1. Cornerstone carried that advantage into halftime.

The Golden Eagles added some insurance in the 63rd minute when Addi Pell scored off an assist from Gortmaker, extending the lead to 3-1.

Cornerstone controlled much of the offensive pressure, outshooting Saint Francis 20-4 and finishing with a 10-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Golden Eagles also held a 9-5 edge in corner kicks.

Saint Francis goalkeeper Alexis Pokley went the full 90 minutes and recorded seven saves. Keenan’s goal accounted for the Cougars’ only shot on target. Saint Francis did come close to another first-half goal when Madison Meeks hit the crossbar in the 28th minute.

With the loss, Saint Francis falls to 2-2 on the season, while Cornerstone improves to 3-0.
