Bellarmine holds off Southern Indiana

Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles battled back from an early deficit Tuesday evening at Strassweg Field, but Bellarmine found the decisive goal in the second half and escaped Evansville with a 2-to-1 victory.

Bellarmine controlled much of the early pressure, forcing USI goalkeeper Jacob English into three saves during the opening 15 minutes.
The Knights finally broke through in the 18th minute.

Johan Nissen-Lie found the back of the net to put Bellarmine ahead, 1-nothing.

Southern Indiana responded before halftime.
Sophomore midfielder Edin Cvorovic unleashed a shot from outside the top of the penalty area and beat the Bellarmine defense for the equalizer. It was Cvorovic’s first goal of the season and USI’s first home goal of 2026.

The teams went into halftime tied at one.

Bellarmine again applied significant pressure after the break, but English continued to keep Southern Indiana in the match.

Eventually, in the 71st minute, Nissen-Lie struck again. His second goal of the evening came off a deflection and restored Bellarmine’s one-goal advantage.

USI attempted to find another equalizer late. Kadiri Bello produced one of the Screaming Eagles’ final opportunities, but his attempt sailed just over the goal.

Southern Indiana finished with four shots. Along with Cvorovic’s goal, Ahiro Nakamae, Nolan Stevens and Bello each recorded an attempt.

English was one of Tuesday’s top Indiana performers despite the loss, finishing with seven saves. He now has 22 saves through USI’s first four matches.

Southern Indiana falls to 0-2-2, while Bellarmine remains unbeaten at 4-0-1.
