Boys Sectional Championship Preview
After the action on Thursday, all 48 Boys High School Soccer Sectional Championships have been set. We have the full slate and start times at the bottom of this post. Before that, we will highlight the matchups where it is ranked teams battling for the title.
#3 Fishers vs. #12 Hamilton Southeastern in Sectional 8
These neighbors have no love for each other and will not be mending the fences on Saturday when they battle for a Sectional Title.
Fishers is 14-1-2 on the season. The Tigers lone loss came on August 25th against Zionsville while their ties have come against Noblesville and Brownsburg. At the season-end poll, Zionsville was 10th, Noblesville 17th, and Brownsburg 18th. The schedule for the Tigers has been tough, but they also own a 1-0 over the rival Royals from September 8th. The lone goal came in the 2nd half of the contest from Mach Chesebrough
Hamilton Southeastern is 10-4-4 heading into tonight’s match. Their ties have come against Cathedral, Noblesville, Guerin Catholic, and Avon. Losses have come against Fishers, Perry Meridian, Zionsville, and Carmel. It’s also important to note HSE went winless in their final 4 matches, drawing 1 and losing 3.
1-0 rematches are always tough to predict. HSE is playing on their home field. This will be a toss-up and a great match to attend; maybe the best in Central Indiana.
#1 Castle vs. #5 EV North in Sectional 16
Castle started their season #15 in the poll and has worked their way up to the top spot. Their opening match was no cake walk either as #9 Jasper gave them a run for their money. The Knights scored the lone goal of that contest in the 84th minute. Castle’s losses came against #2 Bloomington South and #7 Evansville Memorial. Bloomington South is still playing while Memorial was knocked out in OT Thursday against North. Castle defeated North in PKs in the regular season. The Knights haven’t lost since September 16th, winning 6 straight and outscoring opponents 31-2.
North was not on the ISCA preseason poll. They made the week 1 poll at #18. The Huskies are 15-2-1 on the season. Besides Castle, North lost to Memorial in the regular season. One difference is that the Huskies played to a draw against Bloomington South. Their last loss, also to Memorial, was a month ago on September 9th. Since then, the Huskies are 10-0 with 2 wins in overtime. The Huskies have outscored their opponents in that stretch 38-6.
This one could be a toss-up as well. North has had the better stretch. The match is being played on Covert Avenue at the Harrison Soccer Complex. This is the go-to match in Southwest Indiana.
#15 South Bend St. Joseph against #2 Mishawaka Marian in Sectional 18
South Bend St. Joseph is 8-8-1 on the season. Losses have come from matches against teams playing for a Sectional Title such as Mishawaka Marian as well as Warsaw, Chesterton, Goshen, and Northridge. Other losses have come against Penn, Elkhart, and Crown Point.
Mishawaka Marian is 15-2 on the season. Their losses have come against Concord and Penn. The Knights own a 1-0 win over South Bend St. Joseph from September 8th. This match is on their home pitch as well.
This is going to be the toughest ranked match in Northern Indiana, but expect Mishawaka Marian to take home the title.
#20 FW Concordia Lutheran vs. #4 Leo in Sectional 20
This match is similar to what Sectional 20 looks like. This one is also one to watch in Northeastern Indiana.
Concordia is 8-9 on the season, but their strength of schedule will help here.
Leo is 13-3-1 on the year. They own a 4-1 regular season win over Concordia from August. While Leo lost their 2 final regular season matches, those losses are to Homestead and Blackhawk Christian. Both of those teams are playing for a Sectional Title.
Neither school has a questionable loss, so this could be a toss-up.
#5 Covenant Christian vs. #11 Cardinal Ritter in Sectional 25
Covenant Christian is 13-2 on the season. Other than Cardinal Ritter, Covenant Christian’s other loss came against Park Tudor.
Cardinal Ritter is 8-8-2 on the season. Other than Herron, every team Cardinal Ritter has fallen to is playing for a Sectional Title.
The two teams are 1-1 against each other with one win. That makes this a toss-up.
#1 Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian vs. #5 Westview
Blackhawk Christian has not lost yet, but they have a pair of draws. The draws have come against Carroll and South Side. Both of those teams are ranked in 3A and both are playing for a Sectional Title tonight.
Westview is 13-4-2. Their 4 losses have come against Goshen, Concord, Northridge, and West Noble. Draws have come against East Noble and Lakewood Park Christian.
Westview has needed extra time or PKs to win in the tournament. Blackhawk has not. Blackhawk has also been able to rest starters in the 2nd half. Look for #1 to move on.
#9 Barr-Reeve vs. #6 Northeast Dubois in Sectional 46
Barr-Reeve is one of the newer soccer programs. The Vikings came up out of nowhere to find their way into the middle of the rankings. The Vikings made their poll debut in Week 5 and have been climbing all year. They are 14-3 on the season. Their losses have come against Northeast Dubois, Evansville Mater Dei, and Evansville Reitz.
Northeast Dubois has been consistent all year. The Jeeps started 7th, have been as low as 8th, and as high as 5th. They are 12-3-1 on the season. Their 3 losses have come against Southridge, Evansville Christian, and Heritage Hills. All of those teams are ranked and other than Heritage Hills, the teams Northeast Dubois has lost to is playing for a Sectional Title. Southridge knocked out Heritage Hills on Thursday.
Northeast Dubois defeated Barr-Reeve 2-0 on September 1st. This match will be a toss up. Barr-Reeve has played better down the stretch. South Knox matched up Thursday against Northeast Dubois and forced the Jeeps to play extra time. South Knox finished 11-4-2 on the season with 3 of their 4 losses coming against Northeast Dubois and Barr-Reeve.
Look for a potential upset here. Barr-Reeve has come a long way since earlier in the season.
