Brecht’s Brace Leads Butler Past IU Indy, 4-0

Butler women’s soccer made it back-to-back victories Thursday night, turning in a strong offensive performance to defeat crosstown opponent IU Indy 4-0 at Michael A. Carroll Stadium.

The Bulldogs wasted almost no time taking control, scoring just 91 seconds into the match.

Chloe Brecht pushed forward on the right side and delivered a cross toward the near post, where Riley Gumm redirected it into the net to give Butler a 1-0 advantage. Kensey Teffner also earned an assist on the play.

It was Gumm’s second goal of the season and her second in as many matches.

Butler doubled the lead in the 25th minute. A long service from Lola Pepper was mishandled by the IU Indy goalkeeper, allowing Alyssa Carlson to take advantage and finish into an open net from 18 yards. Carlson’s first goal of the season sent the Bulldogs into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.

Then Brecht took over.

In the 53rd minute, Brecht created space near the top of the penalty area and bent a left-footed shot underneath the crossbar to make it 3-0.

Just 12 minutes later, Brecht struck again. Sarah Beth Sizemore found Brecht on the right side before the junior moved toward the middle and scored from about 20 yards for her second goal of the night.

The brace was the first of Brecht’s collegiate career and gave her four goals this season. She finished the night with two goals and an assist.

IU Indy generated opportunities of its own, finishing with 10 shots and putting three on target, but Butler goalkeeper Addison Ash stopped all three. Ash earned her second shutout of the season and fifth of her career.

Butler finished with a 14-10 advantage in shots, a 6-3 edge in shots on goal and a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Gumm, Carlson and Brecht accounted for Butler’s four goals, while Teffner, Brecht, Pepper and Sizemore contributed assists. The assists were the first career points for Teffner and Sizemore, while Pepper also recorded her first collegiate assist.

The victory improves Butler to 3-2-1 on the season, while IU Indy falls to 2-4-1.

Butler now returns home to the Sellick Bowl, where the Bulldogs will host Central Michigan on Sunday at 1 p.m.
