Evansville’s Hugo Amo Earns MVC Goalkeeper of the Week Honors

University of Evansville goalkeeper Hugo Amo has been rewarded for his performance between the posts, earning Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week honors.
The MVC announced its weekly awards Tuesday, with Amo receiving the goalkeeper honor following Evansville’s 1-1 draw at Kentucky on Friday night.
Amo played all 90 minutes in Lexington and helped the Purple Aces secure their first result of the 2026 season.
Kentucky put Evansville under pressure almost immediately. Amo was called into action just 50 seconds into the match, making a save to keep the Wildcats off the board. Kentucky went on to produce four shots in the opening four minutes.
Evansville weathered that early pressure and took the lead in the 12th minute when Alejandro Fernandez scored his first goal as a Purple Ace.
Kentucky held a 10-3 advantage in shots during the opening half, but Amo and the Evansville defense kept the Wildcats scoreless and allowed the Aces to carry a 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Amo made another save in the 68th minute before Kentucky finally broke through in the 74th, when Thomas Berteotti headed home the equalizer.
Neither side could find the winning goal over the final 16 minutes, leaving Evansville with a 1-1 draw.
Amo finished the match with two saves while playing the full 90 minutes. Evansville’s defense also contributed five blocked shots.
The performance continued a solid individual start to the season for Amo. Following the Kentucky match, he ranked third in the Missouri Valley Conference with 3.25 saves per game.
The weekly honor comes during Amo’s first season with the Purple Aces after joining the program from Casper College. The Burgos, Spain, native has quickly established himself as Evansville’s starting goalkeeper.
Amo and the Purple Aces faced another major test Tuesday night when nationally ranked Louisville visited Arad McCutchan Stadium.
While Evansville came up just short in a 1-0 loss, Amo again kept the Aces in the contest against the Cardinals, continuing what has been a strong stretch in goal for the Purple Aces.
