FC Cincinnati Bolsters Roster with European Experience in Douděra, Malatini

FC Cincinnati made a pair of significant moves as the MLS Secondary Transfer Window closed, adding Czech international David Douděra and Argentine defender Julián Malatini as the Orange and Blue strengthen their roster for the stretch run of the 2026 season.
The two newcomers arrive with experience in some of Europe’s biggest competitions, including the UEFA Champions League and German Bundesliga, while giving Cincinnati additional options at both wingback and center back.
Douděra Brings World Cup and Champions League Experience
Cincinnati acquired 28-year-old midfielder David Douděra on a permanent transfer from Czech powerhouse Slavia Prague.
Douděra signed a contract through the 2027-28 MLS season with a club option for 2028-29. His addition remains pending receipt of his P-1 visa.
The Czech international arrives with nearly 350 professional appearances in Europe over the past decade.
Douděra made 153 appearances for Slavia Prague, scoring 24 goals. During his time with the club, Slavia captured consecutive Czech First League championships as well as the 2022-23 Czech Cup.
He also brings considerable experience on the European stage. Douděra appeared seven times during Slavia’s 2025-26 UEFA Champions League campaign and has made 36 appearances in European club competitions overall.
International experience is another major part of his résumé.
Douděra has earned 18 senior caps for Czechia and was selected for the country’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad. He started and played the full 90 minutes against Mexico during the group stage.
Cincinnati supporters could see him primarily on the right side. Douděra has considerable experience as a wingback and provides another high-energy option who can contribute defensively, in transition and in the attack.
He also arrives with a familiar face waiting for him in Cincinnati. Douděra and FCC midfielder Pavel Bucha have known each other since their youth-national-team days and have played together at multiple levels for Czechia.
General Manager Chris Albright emphasized Douděra’s work rate and winning background, describing him as the type of player who can bring both quality and a competitive mentality to Cincinnati.
Malatini Adds Size and Bundesliga Experience
While Douděra strengthens Cincinnati’s options further up the field, Julián Malatini could provide an important boost to the back line.
FC Cincinnati acquired the 25-year-old Argentine defender on loan from Werder Bremen of the German Bundesliga.
The loan runs through June 2027 and includes an option for Cincinnati to make the transfer permanent. Malatini will occupy an international roster slot and, like Douděra, must receive his P-1 visa before joining the club.
At 6-foot-3, Malatini gives Cincinnati another sizable and athletic presence at center back.
He made 32 Bundesliga appearances during his time with Werder Bremen, scoring twice. Before moving to Germany, Malatini played in Argentina for Talleres and Defensa y Justicia, gaining experience in both the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana.
Malatini can also provide positional versatility. Although primarily a center back, he has experience at right back and can operate in either a three- or four-man defensive system.
Cincinnati’s interest in Malatini came after an extensive search.
Albright said the club evaluated more than 300 center backs during the transfer window, with only a handful ultimately reaching the level Cincinnati believed would fit the club.
Malatini is coming off an ankle injury that ended his 2025-26 season early, but Cincinnati says the injury was surgically repaired and the defender has returned to full fitness. He played 90 minutes in preseason friendlies with Bremen and was available from the bench for the Bundesliga club early this season.
His Cincinnati debut won’t necessarily come immediately. Immigration processing could delay Malatini’s arrival and availability, with Albright indicating it could take approximately two to three weeks.
Building for Now — and the Future
Together, the two additions represent an interesting approach from FC Cincinnati.
Douděra provides an established, experienced player who has won championships, competed in the Champions League and represented his country at a World Cup.
Malatini is younger but already owns Bundesliga experience and potentially gives Cincinnati a long-term piece in central defense if his loan ultimately becomes permanent.
Both were also identified by Cincinnati as players who could help the club immediately while remaining building blocks beyond the current campaign.
And Cincinnati may not necessarily be finished.
Although the transfer window has closed, MLS clubs can still sign eligible free agents before the October 9 roster freeze. Albright said Cincinnati remains in conversations with potential targets and hopes the club could make another addition or two.
For an FC Cincinnati side looking to position itself for the stretch run, Douděra and Malatini bring something the Orange and Blue clearly prioritized at the deadline: European experience, versatility and additional depth for the challenges ahead.
