Late Marquette Hat Trick Sinks USI Men’s Soccer, 3-2

The University of Southern Indiana men’s soccer team held the lead twice Saturday afternoon, but a late hat trick from Marquette’s Tomiwa Adewumi lifted the Golden Eagles past the Screaming Eagles, 3-2.

USI entered the match looking for its first victory of the season and couldn’t have asked for a much better start. Christian Rotundo put the Screaming Eagles ahead just 7:05 into the contest, scoring his first goal of the season off an assist from Nolan Stevens.

The 1-0 advantage held through halftime and deep into the second half before Marquette finally found an equalizer.

Adewumi scored his first of the afternoon in the 69th minute, with Aiden Goldberg providing the assist to even the match at 1-1.
USI responded.

Garrett Morris restored the Screaming Eagles’ advantage in the 80th minute, scoring his first goal of the season to put Southern Indiana back in front, 2-1.

But the final six minutes belonged to Adewumi.

The Marquette attacker scored again at 84:49 to tie the match at two. Then, less than two minutes later, Adewumi completed his hat trick by converting a penalty kick at 86:46, giving the Golden Eagles their first lead of the afternoon at 3-2.

USI was unable to find another equalizer before the final whistle.

Marquette controlled the overall attacking numbers, finishing with a 17-7 advantage in shots and putting nine attempts on goal. USI put two shots on target, and both resulted in goals.
The Screaming Eagles’ goalkeeper recorded six saves, while USI also generated five corner kicks compared with 10 for Marquette.

The defeat drops Southern Indiana to 0-3-2 on the season. USI now continues its four-match road swing with a short trip across Evansville to face the University of Evansville on Tuesday, September 15.
