Manchester Uses Second-Half Goals to Knock Off Defiance, 2-1

DEFIANCE, Ohio — Manchester University scored twice in the second half Tuesday night as the Spartans picked up a 2-1 road victory over Defiance College.

Neither team could break through during the opening 45 minutes, although Manchester had an excellent opportunity to grab the lead. Alan Galvez stepped to the penalty spot in the 30th minute, but Defiance goalkeeper Tyler Harper made the save to keep the match scoreless.
Manchester goalkeeper Will Martin also came up with two early saves, helping send the teams into halftime tied at 0-0.

The Spartans finally broke through in the 54th minute.

At 53:37, Fola Afolayan scored his first goal of the season off an assist from Galvez, putting Manchester in front 1-0.

Galvez helped create another goal less than 14 minutes later.

At 67:06, Quentin Taylor found the back of the net for his first goal of the season, again assisted by Galvez. Taylor’s strike would eventually stand as the game-winner and gave Manchester a 2-0 advantage.

Defiance didn’t go away quietly. The Yellowjackets cut the deficit in half at 73:19, when Henrique Wozniak converted a penalty kick to make it 2-1.

Manchester protected the one-goal advantage the rest of the way to secure the road victory.
Galvez played a major role in the Manchester attack, recording two assists. Afolayan finished with two shots, putting both on goal, while Taylor scored on his only attempt.

Martin finished the night with five saves in goal for the Spartans.

Defiance held a 9-7 advantage in total shots, but the teams were even with six shots on goal apiece. The Yellowjackets also led 8-6 in corner kicks. Manchester was whistled for eight fouls compared with 10 for Defiance.

Manchester now turns its attention to an in-state matchup against NCAA Division I opponent Purdue Fort Wayne. The Spartans travel to Fort Wayne on Thursday, September 3, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
