Marian Bounces Back With 3-0 Shutout of IU East

Marian University responded to its weekend loss in a big way Wednesday night, controlling the attack and shutting out IU East 3-0 at Ascension St. Vincent Field.

The victory improved Marian to 7-2-0, while IU East dropped to 2-3-2. The Knights rebounded after falling 2-0 to nationally ranked Indiana Tech on Saturday.

Marian took control with a pair of goals less than three minutes apart in the opening half. Josh Wesseling broke through at 23:26, finishing a chance created by Rafael Zambrano for his fourth goal of the season.

The Knights struck again at 26:04. Samuel Wehaus scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season, with Gustavo Nunes supplying the assist, and Marian carried a 2-0 advantage into halftime.

Marian continued applying pressure after the break and found its third goal in the 62nd minute. After assisting on the opener, Zambrano got on the scoresheet himself at 61:00, scoring his second goal of the season off an assist from Gerald Ramirez.

The Knights dominated the attacking numbers, outshooting IU East 30-9 and putting 18 shots on goal compared with five for the Red Wolves. IU East’s goalkeeper was forced to make 15 saves to keep the margin from growing larger.

Marian also held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. The Knights’ defense handled IU East’s limited opportunities, making five saves to secure the clean sheet.

The match was relatively clean, with Marian committing seven fouls and IU East six. Marian’s Eduardo Rivera received the game’s only yellow card in the 68th minute.
