Racing Louisville Squanders Two-Goal Lead in 3-2 Loss at San Diego
Racing Louisville FC jumped out to an early two-goal advantage Friday night, but San Diego Wave FC stormed back with three unanswered goals in the second half to hand Racing a 3-2 road loss at Snapdragon Stadium.
Louisville wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Lauren Milliet opened the scoring in the 12th minute, finishing an opportunity set up by Kayla Fischer to give Racing a 1-0 advantage.
The visitors doubled their lead just 11 minutes later. In the 23rd minute, Taylor Flint scored her fifth goal of the season off an assist from Arin Wright, putting Louisville in control at 2-0.
Racing carried the two-goal advantage into halftime, but the match changed almost immediately after the break.
Trinity Byars pulled San Diego within one in the 47th minute, scoring off an assist from Mimi Van Zanten. Byars continued to cause problems for the Louisville defense throughout the second half and eventually delivered the equalizer in the 76th minute, scoring her second goal of the night and 10th of the season.
Just four minutes later, San Diego completed the comeback.
Kenza Dali, who entered as a substitute in the 63rd minute in her return from injury, scored in the 80th minute to put the Wave ahead 3-2. Louisville was unable to find an equalizer over the final 10-plus minutes.
San Diego controlled much of the attacking play, finishing with a massive 32-13 advantage in shots and putting 10 attempts on target compared with three for Racing. Louisville goalkeeper Jordyn Bloomer made seven saves, while the Wave also held a 72-28 percent advantage in possession and an 11-6 edge in corner kicks.
The loss drops Racing Louisville to 7-13-2 with 23 points on the season. San Diego improves to 12-7-3 with 39 points.
