Rose-Hulman and Millikin Battle to Wild 3-3 Draw

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Millikin University traded punches throughout the second half Saturday evening before settling for a 3-3 draw at Frank M. Lindsay Field.
Rose-Hulman couldn’t have asked for a much better start. Ryan Shapiro struck just three minutes into the match, scoring his team-leading fifth goal of the season to give the Fightin’ Engineers an early 1-0 advantage.
That lead held through halftime, but the match changed quickly after the break. Bryce Davis brought Millikin level in the 48th minute, scoring off an assist from Luke Butler.
Rose-Hulman answered in the 60th minute. Oliver Fila scored his third goal of the season, with Pace Morel and Andrew Kasbeer-Betty picking up assists, putting the Engineers back in front 2-1.
Millikin responded again when Javan Grooms scored in the 64th minute, assisted by Kyle Grasse, to make it 2-2.
The back-and-forth continued in the 70th minute. Chase Stohlmann delivered his first goal of the season for Rose-Hulman, with Logan Humphries and Morel credited with assists. The goal restored a 3-2 advantage for the Engineers, but Rose-Hulman couldn’t hold it for long.
Just 92 seconds later, Davis struck for his second goal of the night, tying the match at 3-3 in the 71st minute. Neither side could find another breakthrough over the final 19 minutes.
Millikin finished with an 18-13 advantage in shots and an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. Rose-Hulman’s goalkeeper made five saves, while Millikin recorded three. The Engineers generated plenty of pressure of their own, particularly on set pieces, finishing with five corner kicks in the second half and five overall, matching Millikin’s total.
Shapiro, Fila and Stohlmann accounted for the Rose-Hulman goals, while Morel finished with two assists.
The draw moves Rose-Hulman to 2-1-2 on the season, while Millikin moves to 1-3-1.
